There is something about a song……

By Chrissie Gray

There is something about songs – even in an economic downturn songs are still bought and sold, albeit online and downloaded, rather than from the record shop. It seems the charts and the buzz about who is the Christmas number one is still news – appearing on the nationals as a major story. Why is this? Surely, it is only music and marketing?

And yet, there is something about a song.

Couples have “their” song – and I recall the much listened to “Our Tune” with Simon Bates, with the unravelling of a personal tale of romance and song (or perhaps I am just showing my age!). We love this stuff! Why is that?

This shared moment of sentiment cannot have simply arisen out of the heart of man – no good gift comes from anywhere else but heaven. So a song must have been God’s idea. And a search of scripture reveals a God who does indeed sing over the ones He loves (see Zephaniah 3v17).

Have you ever thought about that? That God sings a song over you – He loves you and He is happy – you make Him want to sing (maybe not all the time, admittedly!) but He really does delight in you. It seems incredible, but this idea really is set out in scripture - in the Old Testament at that - the bit we can thoughtlessly only associate with the anger of God. But, despite our assumptions about Him, He is there singing and expressing His love as well!

So, what song means a lot to you? Or makes you smile or tap your feet? What resonates in your heart? Maybe that resonance is part of His song over you? If the words of the song in your mind tie in with truth and goodness and purity, then maybe it really is. So stop and listen for a moment, and hear what He is saying.

We easily sing along with the songs and hymns chosen by whoever chooses them in our churches, without perhaps thinking to Whom they are being sung. They have meaning and express something of our hearts to Him, if we would but stop and think about it.

In the rush and busyness of the New Year, the start of the term, and the cold, and the worry about ice and snow, may we not be so preoccupied that we block out His song over us and His song over this town.

Let’s listen with our hearts, catch the song and sing along!
